Language
An Indo-European language, a member of the Southern branch of the Slavic language family. With 9 million speakers, it is the language of the Bulgarian people. Bulgarian is now one of the official languages of the European Union. An interesting cultural note is how Bulgarian people shake their head to signify "yes" and nod their head to signify "no". This phenomenon is rapidly disappearing with the influence of Western culture.
Economic Significance
As one of the official language of the European Union, there is a strong demand for translation of Bulgarian documents and media. There is also a large diaspora of Bulgarian expats.
History
Modern Bulgarian evolved from a synthetic language to an analytical language over five centuries.

Eastern and Western Bulgarian. The Bulgarian literary norm is based on the Eastern dialect.
