Language

Spoken by the Korean people in North Korea and South Korea, the Korean language features a SOV (subject–object–verb) syntax and an agglutinative morphology. Like Japanese, Korean features a complex system of honorifics. These are extremely important to observe in a business setting.

Economic Significance

The Korean language is the key to a competitive and dynamic business environment. South Korea has a population of 48 million people with a literacy rate of 98%. Major exports are consumer electronics, power systems, automobiles and machinery.

History

Most linguists consider Korean to be a language isolate of the Korean language family. A language isolate is a natural language with no discernable link to any other existing language. The Korean script Hangul was first developed in the 15th century. Before that, Classical Chinese script was used in writing.

Dialects

Standard Korean, Hamgyŏng, Pyong'an, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Kyŏngsang, Jeolla, Cheju
